Painfully aware of her own “foreign” looks, when she meets Marnie, a girl with flowing blonde hair and blue eyes, Anna feels an instant kinship. Struggling with asthma and a general apprehensiveness toward the world, young Anna is sent to the countryside. Much like Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), which was based on Diana Wynne Jones’s 1986 novel of the same name, When Marnie Was There was penned by a non-Japanese author. Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the film is based on Joan G. Studio Ghibli’s 2014 anime drama When Marnie Was There (Japanese: 思い出のマーニー, Marnie of Memories) was the production company’s last project before its six-year hiatus, ended in 2020 with the release of Earwig and the Witch.
